Zwift to RAAM in six months. Virtually ready by Fred Horwood

It’s one week until I leave for Oceanside, California.  When I was asked in late December last year if I was interested in joining the team I answered yes without hesitating.  Although I was an alternate, I was excited about the chance to participate.  I continued to train indoors throughout the winter using an indoor trainer and Zwift.  A group of friends and I scheduled conference calls a couple of times a week where we would speak to one and other as we raced our avatars on Zwift.  One day, as a challenge, we “climbed” a mile (5280 feet of vertical ascent) on the indoor trainer.  When I got the word in early April that I was an official member of the team I left the virtual world of riding behind and hit the outdoors.

Strava has been an incredible motivator.  Having all of our team members post our rides has kept me honest and motivated.  On more than one occasion I woke up and was not terribly excited to ride but afraid of falling behind on Strava I forced myself to get out.  I have “raced to train” for many years and like having goals and challenges to meet.  RAAM was looming!

As is always the case, ten days before a big event I wonder if I have trained enough, trained correctly and if I will be ready.  I can’t wait to test myself, contribute to the team and see the country at 20 mph.
